If you’ve been on Google Maps recently, you might have felt like you’d been transported back to the 1980’s.

For April Fools day, Google transformed their map into the classic version of Pac-Man. Users were able to guide Pac-Man through their home town, with the ghosts hot on their tail.

Now I’m not a fan of April Fools day. Sure it’s a bit of fun, but a lot of people jump on the bandwagon and it’s just gets a bit predictable.

But I have to say, I was pretty impressed with Google. I mean, I’m not surprised. Of course Google would have had one of the best April Fools stunts. They’ve previously turned the entire site backwards and allowed their users to catch pokemon in their back yard.

So for someone who hates April Fools day, there’s a valuable lesson to be learned here. It’s classic Bananarama syndrome. It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it.

Anyone can pull off an April Fools joke. You only had to look at Facebook to see the hordes of terrible statuses claiming that YouTube was going to be shut down forever, or that Zayn Malik from One Direction was rejoining the band.

But it’s something else to carefully plan an April Fools that will not only surprise your audience but excite them too.

After all, I certainly enjoyed running away from the ghosts and now I’m telling you about it too…

Well done Google. Again.
